This page is for the legacy MESS marks transfer process.
Please refer to the project website to find out if your course is still using this system. If not, you will be using the new Grade Management System.
This document will help you troubleshoot some common issues that can affect moving marks from the Mark Centre to MESS, or from other spreadsheets to the Mark Centre.
Students in one spreadsheet but not the other
After you have run the MESS or External Marks toolbars, some student names may change colour. This indicates that a student is in one of your spreadsheets, but not in the other.
In Mark Centre but not in MESS
The Mark Centre in Learning@Griffith shows you who is enrolled in the course today. If a student enrols late or their enrolment is removed from the course by Student Admin, then they will disappear from the Mark Centre the following morning.
Students in Mark Centre but not in MESS could be:
- late enrolments
- recently reinstated after paying late fees
- permitted to view the course without being currently enrolled in it, e.g. to allow them to review material for a deferred exam
In MESS but not in Mark Centre
The MESS spreadsheet shows course enrolments at the time it was generated, which is usually around census date. If in doubt, the School Administration Officer (SAO) or Program Service Officer can check a student’s current enrolment status in PeopleSoft.
Students in MESS but not the in Mark Centre in Learning@Griffith could have:
- withdrawn
- dropped the course
- been blocked, e.g. suspended for non-payment of fees
Only one file showing when you attempt a marks transfer
Close Excel completely. Open Excel again, and use File > Open to open both files from within that instance.
Nothing happens when you attempt a marks transfer in or out of the MESS spreadsheet
Must complete cell C7 (Y or Yes) in MESS.
Nothing happens when you attempt a marks transfer in or out of the External Marks spreadsheet
Student usernames must be in column A of your external marks spreadsheet, and the marks must be in column E. Data in columns B, C, D and anything after F will be ignored.
