The information below is for staff.

If you are teaching a course, then you are in the right place!

Are you a student?

If you are studying a course and looking for information on assessment, refer to our student material:

The Mark Centre is used for managing student assessment within the course site.  Marks must be recorded in the Mark Centre for all assessment items for all enrolled students in a course, whether the assessments are assignments submitted through Learning@Griffith, presentations, an art piece, or an end of trimester exam sat in an exam venue.

Student assessment marks recorded in the Mark Centre are then transferred by the legacy MESS transfer process or the new Grade Management System to calculate, approve and award student grades.

Please note that the helpguides provided by Blackboard refer to the "Grade Center" rather than "Mark Centre", but these are the same tool.

Good to know

  • Marks must be available to students via the Mark Centre (also known as My Marks or My Grades). In accordance with privacy rules, reinforced by the Griffith Assessment Procedure for Staff section 3.10.3, student names or IDs and their associated marks may not be published on course content pages. When you add marks to the Mark Centre, students are able to view their own marks only via the My Marks links in Learning@Griffith.
  • The Grades Management module relies on each column’s ‘possible points’ to reflect the ‘marked out of’ value for the associated assessment item, as published to the student in the Course Profile. Without this, the module will not be able to retrieve grades from the Mark Centre for calculation.
  • In addition to being able provide feedback to students in written form instructors also have the ability to record feedback as a video or audio recording. For more information on how to use and create feedback using this feature please see the following link.
  • Some columns are automatically created for you, and may calculate marks automatically for you.  To ensure students see only the marks you want them to see, you should organise your Mark Centre at the beginning of every teaching period. See Hiding marks from students for further information.
  • If you want to view your Mark Centre by student groups - e.g. tutorial groups - you can do this by setting up the groups in the Griffith Group Manager and ensuring that you have enabled Smart Views for those groups.
  • If you find scrolling in the Mark Centre visually or physically difficult, you may find an improvement by enabling screen reader mode.
