When you are using online assessment tools, a column in the Mark Centre is created automatically for the marks to go into. You can also manually create columns if you want to add marks for an assessment such as a presentation, art piece, musical performance or oral exam.

A feature called "Needs Marking" can alert you when something has been submitted which you need to mark, and will link you directly to that submission.  Access the Needs Marking tool from Control Panel > Mark Centre.

Step by step

The basics: entering marks

Marks can be added to the Mark Centre in a number of ways:

  • automatically, if you are running an online test with no essay questions in it
  • by marking within the screens for Blackboard tools, which will pass the mark to the Mark Centre
  • by typing directly into the Mark Centre screens
  • by uploading marks from a spreadsheet  - including spreadsheets produced by exam scanning, or from a file you have made yourself.  (You may need to use our External Marks Toolbar to transfer marks from these spreadsheets.)
  • by marking using the features in tools such as Turnitin or Pebblepad, which will pass the marks to the Mark Centre when configured to do so

Where to enter marks

These Assessment tools allow marking both via the Mark Centre, and via the Assessment submission point itself within the Assessment / Content area:

  • Blogs, Journals and Wikis can be marked via 'Edit Mark' in the submission point, or in the Mark Centre
  • Turnitin can be marked via the Mark Centre, or via the Submissions Inbox in the submission point for the assessment, (that is, if 'Grademark' and 'Turnitin marks' have been enabled when setting up the submission point).

Other Assessment tools can only be marked via the Mark Centre:

  • Discussion Boards can only be marked via the Mark Centre
  • Tests with Essay questions can only be marked via the Mark Centre
  • Assignments and SafeAssignments can be marked using the Inline Marking feature, which can only be accessed via the Mark Centre / View Attempt page
