Storage / Backup Options

Who can request storage?

Server Administrators, Application Administrators or Application Owners typically apply for this when:

  1. Setting up a new server or application
  2. Migrating a server or an application

What Types of storage can be requested?

SAN Disk: This is storage that can be presented to servers that are located in corporate data centres and are fibre-connected to our Storage Area Network. As server virtualisation increases within our environment, this option will increasingly become more of a background function, with VMware being the abstract layer to request this.

NAS Disk: This is storage that can be presented to servers over the network using CIFS or NFS protocols.

Storage Tier Definitions

Tier-1: This is fast and, as a rule-of-thumb, suitable for production applications and I/O drive intensive development environments

Tier-2: This is suitable for less I/O drive intensive development environments

Tier-3: This is slower than Tier-1 and Tier-2 storage and suitable for less I/O drive intensive such as development environments and archival data.

Data Protection Options

Snapshot: This option is used to take a point in time copy of the data to enable quick rollback or granular recovery options.

Replication: This is used for Disaster Recovery ( DR ) purpose or where there is a requirement to store data in multiple geo-graphic locations. If used for DR purposes, then the storage will form part of a published Disaster Recovery Process ( DRP ) document.

Server backup

This provides a means of recovering files in the event of their loss, and of archived files.

Policy Level 1:
Please contact Backup Team if you require this policy level

1 Full per week cycle – retained for 4 weeks
2 Offsite per month cycle – retained for 12 months
2 Offsite per year cycle – retained for 7 years

Policy Level 2:
Recommended for general production systems
1 Incremental per day cycle – retained for 4 weeks
1 Full per week cycle – retained for 4 weeks
2 Offsite per month cycle – retained for 12 months

Policy Level 3:
Recommended for development systems
1 Incremental per day cycle – retained for 2 weeks
1 Full per week cycle – retained for 2 weeks

Only files that exist on the server during the backup window are backed up.
Files which have been created and deleted on the same day will not be backed up.
