Griffith strives to be a place where all peoples of all cultures feel valued and respected

At Griffith, we are led by our values in creating a brighter future for all where everyone should be given the opportunity to make a positive difference to themselves and others. We acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have maintained unique relationships to the land, sea, waterways, and the air above and around us over tens of thousands of years as the oldest continuous surviving culture in the world. We acknowledge Aboriginal Australians as Traditional Custodians within our campuses.

Griffith University strives to be a place where all peoples of all cultures feel valued and respected, and where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, cultures, knowledges, experiences, and perspectives, form an integral part of our learning, teaching, research, and community engagement.

Workshops

At Griffith, we are dedicated to establishing a structured approach for integrating Indigenous Knowledges into all areas of the University community, as outlined in our Creating a future for all - Strategic Plan 2020-2025.

In line with this commitment, we invite staff to participate in one of the forthcoming Embedding Indigenous Knowledges and Cultural Competency workshops. These workshops are conducted in-person across all Griffith campuses.

Embedding Indigenous Knowledges Workshops

Griffith University is committed to producing graduates who value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and the importance of these in our nation’s history and future. Through the Embedding Indigenous Knowledges workshops we commit to implement, monitor, and evaluate the embedding of Indigenous value systems and knowledges into Griffith University structures, our learning and teaching and research. This includes embedding Indigenous knowledges into curriculum, and formal strategies that ensure that students graduate with a strong foundational understanding of Indigenous values and knowledges.

Griffith stays strong to our commitment to social justice, authentically translating our values into actions, embedding Indigenous voices into planning and outcomes, and supporting co-design with Indigenous people, and their unique approaches to learning, teaching, and research. In this implementation, the intellectual property rights of Indigenous Knowledges must be appropriately acknowledged, respected, and understood.

The Embedding Indigenous Knowledges workshop will utilise examples of current research and best practice to provide academic staff examples of best practice in embedding Indigenous Knowledges into their programs and courses.

This workshop is for Griffith University Academic staff and those in Learning & Teaching roles only.

For more information on how to enrol and session dates follow the links on the enrolment section below.

Cultural Competency Workshops

Participation in the Cultural Competency workshop is essential for staff to honour and respect the First Peoples of Australia, by understanding their unique cultures, histories, and knowledge. It is crucial for improving the educational experiences of Indigenous students, promoting inclusivity and equity within the university, and enhancing personal and professional growth of staff. Furthermore, this training aligns with Australia's national objectives for reconciliation, fostering stronger, more respectful ties with Indigenous communities, thereby creating a culturally safe and supportive environment for the entire university community.

The Cultural Competency workshop focuses on providing an understanding of the historic and contemporary environment for Australia’s First Peoples. The first face-to-face workshop, Crossing Cultures, Hidden Histories will be offered frequently across all campuses and will help introduce staff to First Peoples’ history, culture and perspectives. The workshop is open to all Griffith University staff.

To enrich your understanding and enhance your experience in the workshop, we encourage you to complete Module 1 (CCL-M1 Culture and Identity) and Module 2 (CCL-M2 Country) of the AIATSIS Core Cultural Learning online modules before attending the event.

Please note: If you completed this course in 2023, you do not need to register for this one. The second stage of the Cultural Competency Workshops will be offered from mid-2024.
