Griffith holds anonymity in the highest regard as the integrity of survey data is central to the daily operations of the Surveys and Engagement team. In order to receive wholly open and honest feedback, it is imperative that anonymity is maintained at all times and the feedback process is treated with respect. The Surveys and Engagement team adheres to this philosophy in its practices, and works only with external research partners who also abide by high standards of anonymity protocol.
Commitment to data integrity
Quality response data is necessary to conduct reliable analyses that influence quality enhancement programs for the University. The Surveys and Engagement team are committed to ensuring that survey integrity is upheld throughout Griffith.
Removal of identifiers
Individually identifying information such as an individual’s s-number and name is removed from final reports before they are shared with research teams.

Survey and Personal Data
Survey results provide quantifiable data that shed light on Griffith's quality enhancement measures. By combining these results with de-identified demographic data, Griffith is well-placed to more effectively understand and act upon feedback. For example, responses to survey questions about learning resources are much more telling when a certain percentage of respondents who work part time are known, have carer responsibilities or are non-native English speakers.
Sometimes, s-numbers are asked for to add demographic characteristics from the University’s systems to the survey data. This allows survey results to be contextualised, and to do so without adding additional questions to surveys. Using s-numbers in survey administration also helps to generate reminder email lists that eliminate unnecessary emails being sent to those who have responded, and to draw incentive prize winners.
While s-numbers are useful in some admin processes, first and last names or anything that could identify individuals in our reporting are never used.
Whether a survey is conducted wholly in-house or in partnership with an approved external agency, survey and/or other data is only shared as directly required for survey administration or data analysis purposes. In the case of data analysis, responses and any accompanying personal details such as demographics (i.e. gender, age, FT/PT study status) are provided to researchers in aggregate and after identifiers such as s-numbers or names have been removed.
The Policy on Surveying of Griffith Students and Staff provides structure to the many valuable non-core surveys that may be conducted throughout the University. Supporting this policy is the Application to Conduct a Survey form and the Survey Application Flow Chart, which helps users determine whether an application is necessary.
The Student Experience of Courses (SEC) and Teaching (SET) policy outlines the framework supporting SEC/SET surveys, including information about survey instruments, staff and student responsibilities, and data access delegations.
