It is expected that refinements to the research topic will occur from time-to-time, and in particular at the time the final version of the thesis is drafted. Minor changes to the title of the research topic may be notified at any time, via myGriffith, My research, My Candidate Centre. A request to alter the thesis topic must be supported by the principal supervisor and the Dean or Deputy Dean (Research).

If a major change in direction is contemplated, especially when the candidature is well advanced, approval by the Dean or Deputy Dean (Research) is required using this same form. A request from the student explaining the circumstances leading to the change, together with a new research proposal endorsed by the principal supervisor must be provided. The Dean or Deputy Dean (Research) and Head of Element or delegate (HDR Convenor) should advise the Griffith Graduate Research School of any new supervisory arrangements and confirm that the element is able to support the candidature in terms of resources, facilities etc.

Where a major change of topic is approved before the candidature confirmation procedure is completed, the Dean or Deputy Dean (Research) may determine that the due date for confirmation be postponed for up to but no more than six months. If a major change of topic is approved after candidature confirmation has been completed, the Dean or Deputy Dean (Research) may require that the candidature confirmation procedure be repeated.
