Financial assistance

The Completion Assistance Postgraduate Research Scholarship provides financial support to candidates who are in the writing up stage of their candidature. Interim COVID-19 CAPRS Conditions of Award have been put in place to support the award of CAPRS to candidates, taking into consideration impacts relating to COVID-19 measures. Eligibility and selection criteria have also been broadened to allow more candidates to apply.

The application closing date for the next CAPRS round is 23 October 2020.

In exceptional circumstances, for example where the applicant is experiencing severe financial hardship, 'out of round' consideration can be requested to facilitate an earlier outcome. 

International candidates who are awarded a CAPRS will also be provided with a tuition scholarship for the duration of the award.

The Publication Assistance Scholarship provides financial support to candidates who have submitted their thesis and are now working on a publication. Interim COVID-19 PAS Conditions of Award have been put in place to support the award of PAS to candidates, taking into consideration impacts relating to COVID-19 measures. Eligibility and selection criteria have been broadened to allow more candidates to apply and research work other than a publication may also now be considered.

Candidates under examination who are experiencing financial hardship as a result of coronavirus, including international candidates who may not be able to return home due to Government and travel restrictions, may apply for a second PAS.

Confirmed Candidates in their second year of candidature (FTE) are normally able to apply for scholarships in the HDR Annual Scholarship Round under the Continuing Student Scholarship Scheme. As an interim measure, taking into consideration impacts relating to COVID-19 measures, candidates will be able to apply for scholarships commencing 1 July 2020. Applications must be submitted by 20 May.
Applications submitted by 31 July will also be considered, with scholarships commencing 1 October.

Applicants in their first 12 months (FTE) of candidature will be able to apply for scholarship in the Annual Scholarship Round.

Griffith University provides interest-free student loans to help students with the cost of education and living expenses. All currently enrolled Griffith University students completing an Award program can apply for a loan of up to $1,000 to be repaid within 12 months for domestic students or six months for international students.

Postgraduate students (including HDR candidates) who can demonstrate severe financial disadvantage impacting adversely on their studies, may be eligible to apply for a one-off Education Costs Bursary of up to $800. Funding is provided by GUPSA (for postgraduate students at Brisbane and Logan campuses), and by GCAP (for Gold Coast postgraduate students).

Since only a limited number of Education Costs Bursaries are available, these will be distributed to eligible applicants who plan to continue and complete their studies and have been assessed as demonstrating the greatest need.

The aim of the Safety Net bursaries is to provide “once off” financial assistance to students who are experiencing extreme financial difficulties impacting adversely on their studies. These bursaries focus on specific extenuating circumstances students are experiencing at the time of the application, and may complement other financial support arrangements. Bursaries are not provided to cover University tuition fees. As funds are limited, it is expected that funds are requested only where students plan to continue and complete their studies.

If you are currently experiencing a tenancy dispute, information is available at the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) website.

When tenancy disputes occur, the RTA encourages tenants/residents and property managers/owners to try to resolve disagreements by talking to each other. Often disputes arise when someone does not meet the terms of the tenancy agreement so it is a good idea for everyone to understand their rights and responsibilities.

The RTA's free dispute resolution service provides conciliation to help people resolve tenancy disputes if they are unable to do this themselves.

Funding is available for Queenslanders who have lost their job due to the impacts of COVID-19 and who do not have access to other financial assistance.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• You live in Queensland
• You have, or will shortly have, a bond registered with the Residential Tenancies Authority
• You are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a temporary or permanent protection visa or possess a bridging visa
• You do not have more than $10,000 in cash and savings
• You can provide evidence of attempts to negotiate a payment plan with your lessor
• You have lost your job and have applied to Centrelink for income support
• You are waiting for your application with Centrelink to be approved.

A new service is running if you live in Logan City and are in significant hardship because of COVID-19, and don’t have the support of family and friends. Local community organisations, coordinated by YFS, have united to help people who don’t have other sources of support to obtain essentials such as groceries and pharmaceuticals.

We are working with Logan City Council, the State Emergency Service and Lighthouse Care to provide groceries and other essential items to vulnerable people.
