Text matching or originality checking software assists in educating students about Academic Integrity. Note that text matching software does not in itself detect plagiarism, rather that academics can use the reports provided to interpret and determine whether 'matched text' has been plagiarised or properly attributed.

Griffith University offers access to two text matching tools - SafeAssign and Turnitin.

SafeAssign

SafeAssign provides an online text-matching service, accepting a single file submission. SafeAssign handles individual and group assessment.

Turnitin

Turnitin provides an online text-matching service, and end-to-end electronic assessment submission, marking and return. Turnitin handles individual assessment.

A Note on Turnitin Paper View Request emails

A Turnitin Paper View Request is an option for examiners from other institutions to initiate an email, via Turnitin, to a Griffith University examiner requesting permission to view a copy of assessment items that have been indicated as matching in an Originality Check Report.

Griffith University discourages its academic staff and examiners from initiating such requests in relation to the work of Griffith students and, similarly in response, they will not provide a copy of the matching assessment item, or disclose the authorship details for any Griffith student's assessment item matching that submitted at another institution, or to any person from another institution who makes this request through Turnitin.
