Learning@Griffith Help in Canvas

We have a brand-new help website for the new LMS Canvas, with access to further support from 24/7 call and chat lines.

A rubric is an assessment tool listing assessment criteria for an assignment, and allows teaching staff to provide marks and feedback against each criteria.  Rubrics are constructed by teaching staff for a course, and made available to students.

Turnitin Rubrics are a separate tool.  Information about Rubrics and Grading Forms can be found in the Turnitin Section of this website.

Good to know

  • The completed rubric will add up all the marks allocated against each criteria, and display a total
  • Once you have created a rubric, you can use it for multiple assessment items
  • You can share rubrics with your colleagues

Step by step: the basics

Creating Rubrics

To create a Rubric:

  1. Go to the Control Panel, expand the Course Tools section and select Rubrics.
  2. Click Create Rubric.
  3. Type a Name for the rubric. The name is used to identify the rubric.
  4. Edit the rubric grid (see the detailed helpguide linked below for more information).
  5. Click Submit.

Marking and Clearing Rubric Selections

There should be a mark assigned to each attempt before you click Submit on the Mark Attempt screen.  If there is a hyphen/dash in the box (e.g. if the assessment is out of 10 marks, it might read -/10) the system interprets this as a null grade, and removes all of the information you have entered into the rubric.

Occasionally the rubric selections for a particular student's submission need to be cleared to empty state (pre-marking state).  You can accomplish this by replacing the grade of the question with a hyphen/dash (-) and saving.

Making rubrics and feedback visible to students

Rubrics can be made visible when students are taking the assessment; after marking is complete; or not at all.  You can set the option of your choice at the time of creating the rubric.  You may not be able to use Rubrics to deliver feedback in all assessment types - please contact us if you are unsure.

If you have the rubric applied to a Test, you must also change the Test Options so that students can see the Feedback.

Please note that if you use the Feedback box on the bottom of the rubric screen, students will see comments entered here but Instructors will not.  This is due to a bug in the system that we hope to resolve in future software versions.
