Windows PCs

The University has a preferred supplier agreement in place with two PC hardware vendors; Dell and Hewlett Packard. We currently recommend these for use within our IT environment. When you are purchasing a computer we will usually provide you with a quote from both vendors.

Desktop Computers

  • Hewlett Packard
  • Dell Optiplex series

These desktop computers are covered by a 4 year - next business day onsite parts and labour warranty.

Laptop Computers

  • Dell - Latitude Range
  • Hewlett Packard

These laptop computers are covered by a 3 year - next business day onsite parts and labour warranty and accidental damage insurance.

Apple OSX

The current iMac range of desktop computer is generally recommended for people within the university that have a requirement to use the Apple OSX operating system. If 'high-end' graphics and animation work is required then the Mac Pro desktop is the model of choice.

The Macbook Pro range of laptops is recommended for those people that require a mobile Apple OSX computer.

Apple Mac equipment is covered by a three year warranty (may require faulty unit to be returned to an Apple dealer).

Please note, there are known problems with using some services within the Griffith IT environment when using the Apple OSX operating system.

Linux OS

We also recommend the Dell and Hewlett Packard equipment listed above for Linux users. These brands are usually well supported within the latest releases of most popular Linux distributions. It's also possible to use some versions of Linux on some Apple hardware but we recommend you consult with your Linux vendor for advice on this.

Please note, there are known problems using some services within the Griffith IT environment when using a Linux operating system.
